“World War II? I missed it. As a five-year old, I recall my dad racing downtown on December 8, 1941 to enlist. He was rejected — ‘Too old!’ So he put on his helmet and Air Raid Warden arm band. Almost 18 years later, after I graduated from college, I joined the Army National Guard. I was chief of a public information unit writing press releases and briefing news reporters — we called it the fur-lined foxhole.”
