Belmont Village Senior Living’s residents aren’t the only individuals who need care. Family caregivers often feel strained and isolated. For caregivers in the Austin area, there’s a new support group for those seeking fellow caregivers for discussion and support. Family caregivers in Texas provided 3.1 billion hours of care—worth an estimated $35 billion—to their parents, spouses, partners, and other adult loved ones last year alone, according to AARP Public Policy Institute’s recent report. Caregiving is an arduous task and it often results in high levels of stress.
“The emotional experiences involved with caregiving can strain even the most capable person. The resulting feelings of anger, anxiety, sadness, isolation, exhaustion—and then guilt for having these feelings—can exact a heavy toll,” says Christy Christine, community relations director of Belmont Village Senior Living Lakeway. “What we all must understand is that stress from caregiving is common, and you don’t have to go through it alone. There are effective ways to manage and alleviate caregiver stress, and that’s exactly what the Caregiving Cafe support group is intended for.”
At 10 a.m. on the last Monday of every month, caregivers in the Austin area are invited to gather at the Belmont Village Senior Living Lakeway Information Center to share their experiences in a supportive, safe environment. Caregiving Cafe meetings last about two hours, and a light lunch is served. They are free and open to the public to attend.
