“My inspiration was the lady who ran the El Centro (CA) Men’s Chorus,” recalls Cortez about his early days as a singer. “She heard me sing and said, ‘Honey, you are a soloist.’ For thirty years, I played string bass and sang in a trio called The Mamselles. It was a terrific deal. The girls were beautiful and people thought me handsome. We toured luxury hotels in Los Angeles, San Diego and Palm Springs.
